The Site
Located in the coastal city of Plymouth, the site comprises of a new multi-level development, worth £36 million. Situated in the heart of the city centre, the new Jury’s Inn is a short distance from the new shopping centre and the Barbican Maritime Village.
Jury’s Doyle Hotel Group devised a plan that has developed the area into a 229-bedroom hotel, a 5,000 square feet leisure space including a bar and restaurant area. In addition, 10,000 square feet dedicated to meeting rooms, 60 apartments have been devised as well as a car park for customers.
The Challenge
The design required waterproofing of the basement area, which had a retaining wall that required membrane protection and waterstops. The retaining wall supported by struts, required a membrane, which is pre-applied but would not allow water to travel between the membrane and structural concrete. Application of the membrane and concrete would need to take place in a specialized manner; so that once the struts are removed the structure would be able to hold the weight of the soil behind the retaining wall.
The Solution
Preprufe, a pre-applied membrane was specified for the basement due to its unique ability to adhere to poured concrete, preventing water migration between the structure and membrane.
As part of the Preprufe system AdcorÒ 500S, a hydro-expansive waterstop is used to protect concrete construction joints. When fully enclosed in concrete, the swellable properties in the waterstop form a seal against the concrete faces, resulting in continuous protection against hydrostatic pressure.
The challenge of ensuring the retaining wall would be robust enough to withstand the weight of the soil was managed by adopting a technique of sequential pours. This meant that the Preprufe would be applied first, and then cast in concrete, which once cured would be able to support the load. The strut could then be removed, and this process was repeated with all the struts, resulting a solid retaining wall.
